Ovia Health launches new partnership to reduce unnecessary C-sections

February 15, 2019

As part of our mission to improve the lives of women and families, we partner with other leading health organizations to improve health outcomes through personalized and evidence-based programming.

That’s why we’re proud to announce our collaboration with the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) and their My Birth Matters initiative. The partnership will contribute to the ongoing work Ovia Health does in collaboration with the Delivery Decisions Initiative at Ariadne Labs. Together, we are exploring ways to put quality data and clinically-validated information into the hands of millions of women around the country, enabling them to self-advocate and make informed healthcare decisions.

My Birth Matters (MBM), is a patient education effort developed by CHCF, the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, and Consumer Reports. The campaign, which launched in 2018, is designed to improve the quality of maternity care being delivered by educating expectant mothers about medically unnecessary C-sections and empowering women to self-advocate more effectively in the clinical setting.

In the United States, nearly 4 million babies are born every year, and 32% of those births are delivered via cesarean. While C-sections can be critical and even life-saving for mom and baby, they are often performed when a vaginal delivery would be a safer option. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the optimal cesarean rate should fall between 10-15%.

Many women are unaware that C-sections are major surgeries that come with serious health risks and should only be performed when medically necessary. By partnering with Ariadne Labs, CHCF, CMQCC, and Consumer Reports, the My Birth Matters videos will be made available to women using Ovia Health to support them during their pregnancy and childbirth. Together we can help millions of women play a role in improving the quality of care they receive.
