Ovia Family Award Winners: Baby Monitors

What are the Ovia Family Awards?

Every year we ask Ovia parents to nominate the products and brands that supported their parenting journey and to tell us how/why they made such an impact on their lives.

We analyze thousands of votes, pieces of feedback, and thoughtful recommendations to find the best of the best to give an Ovia Family Award. When you see our seal, you know that what you’re buying was chosen by parents who have used it, trust it, and really do recommend it to families just like yours.

In this category, we’re giving awards for:

  • Best monitor for video
  • Best monitor for audio
  • Best monitor for health tracking

Best Baby Monitor for Video: Infant Optics DXR-8

Very clear, great zoom features, and extra lens.”

There are (generally) two types of modern baby monitors: monitors that send a signal to a dedicated screen/tablet and ones that use your home wifi to send audio and video to your phone.

The Infant Optics DXR-8 is the first kind: it streams real-time video to a dedicated 3.5” LCD color display that also has controls to pan and tilt the camera as needed.

“Loved this. Loved that it doesn’t depend on WiFi. Love the range; we could be outside and still see and hear the nursery on the other side of the property. We loved being able to zoom and pan (sometimes baby was in the swing & sometimes the crib).”

“We love this monitor! Quality is great, and I love that it doesn’t use WiFi for security reasons. Great range and easy to use! Would recommend to anyone!”

What really sets the DXR-8 apart are its three interchangeable lenses. When your baby is still teensy you can use the zoom lens to get a detailed view of their crib, and as they get older you can graduate to the wide lens to get a full view of their nursery.

It’s a really simple innovation that adds years of value to the DXR-8.

“Wonderful monitor! Have had zero issues. Picture is clear, night vision is awesome, audio picks up every little teeny noise. It also comes with a zoom lens, which has been super helpful because I had to place the camera a bit far away from the bed.”

Parents also seem to really appreciate how portable this system is.

“I love that you can reposition the camera or talk to your child from the controller.”

“Have absolutely loved this system. Lightweight and portable, it even comes with us when we go on vacation.”

Best Baby Monitor for Audio: Vtech VM321

Great range and sound quality.”

Sometimes great video just isn’t that important. When you’ve got older kids, often all you need to know is that they aren’t hurt or getting into trouble. For that, you want a monitor with clear, consistent audio that you’ll be able to hear over the sound of a television or the ambient noises of a kitchen being put to use.

Ovia parents really like the options from Vtech because they’re simple, they work, and perhaps most importantly, they’re easy on your wallet.

“Clear sound, easy to use, affordable.”

One clever parent pointed out another great reason to have a monitor with very clear audio and an awesome battery life: so you can communicate across the house!

“Great sound quality, we even use it as an in-house intercom.”

Just because everyone has a cell phone doesn’t mean you want to call someone who is in the other room. A Vtech baby monitor is a great way to talk to another caregiver in a different room without having to shout.

Best Baby Monitor For Health Tracking: Owlet

Owlet is the best hands down. Worth every penny! Gave me peace of mind from day one of using it for my baby that it would wake me if my baby needed me. I slept like a baby knowing I would be alerted if the need arose. My baby didn’t mind the sock from day one, never messed with it, slept so well & safely.”

If you haven’t seen Owlet before, it’s worth learning a bit more about. A truly unique system, Owlet is primarily a “smart sock” that your baby wears as they sleep. The sock monitors their heart rate, oxygen levels, and sleep. It can set off an alarm if something seems wrong.

“Having heart problems myself, it wasn’t enough to simply hear from the doctor my baby’s heart looks good. I needed to see it. With the Owlet I can rest easier knowing the monitor has my back.”

With the Owlet App and Owlet Cam you also have access to all the benefits of a baby monitor. Combined, this system helps you visualize your baby’s health and sleep trends so you can optimize their sleep schedule.

More than anything else, Ovia Parents said that what Owlet offers is a unique peace of mind you can only get from a health-monitoring baby monitor.

“I’m obsessed with this thing. After having 24/7 monitoring in the NICU for over two months, going home with no biometric info being fed to us was scary. With the Owlet, I could take a shower while baby slept, or take a nap myself, knowing it would alarm if baby’s oxygen or heart rate dipped.”

“Actually works and can save your child’s life. I can say that I did have a warning and was able to get to my baby in time and made sure he was ok. Don’t know what would have happened if I didn’t have it.”
