Ovia Family Award Winners: Breast Pumps & Accessories

What are the Ovia Family Awards?

Every year we ask Ovia parents to nominate the products and brands that supported their parenting journey and to tell us how/why they made such an impact on their lives.

We analyze thousands of votes, pieces of feedback, and thoughtful recommendations to find the best of the best to give an Ovia Family Award. When you see our seal, you know that what you’re buying was chosen by parents who have used it, trust it, and really do recommend it to families just like yours.

In this category, we’re giving awards for:

  • Best pump
  • Best wearable pump
  • Best manual pump
  • Best nursing pillow

For all our other winners, visit our Ovia Family Awards Hub.

Best Pump: Spectra S2

I was skeptical of this pump because of how gentle and quiet it is, but sure enough, I was able to pump more with the Spectra than with another major brand pump (even hospital grade.)”

If you don’t have a breast pump and need one, it’s likely that you can get one completely covered by your insurance. Know that they probably cover several options when it comes to pumps and that you don’t have to go with the first one they offer you. Ovia Parents recommend that you be sure to ask about the Spectra S2!

“I love the night light during night time pumping sessions! Very easy to clean, compatible with all hands-free accessories I have ordered, and it was covered by my insurance! Love that it is a closed system pump.”

For Ovia moms, Spectra checks all the boxes for what to look for in a pump. And it’s quite a lot of boxes. You want something that’s quiet, has hospital-grade suction, a few pumping modes that mimic how your baby nurses, portability, and is easy to properly clean. It’s a long list and Spectra delivers.

“Closed system, BPA free bottles, and tubes. Customer service is responsive (though you most likely won’t need to call them).”

“It’s a closed system, so sanitizing is quick and easy. Very easy to figure out how to use. Also has a model that is rechargeable, which makes pumping on the go easy.”

“Amazing pump! Unit has many settings so you can accommodate to your own specific needs when pumping. Has “let down” and “expression” modes each have customizable settings depending on pump session. Has a timer and built-in light so you can see in the dark.”

If you think another pump might suck even more (because for pumps sucking is a good thing) you might want to learn more about our other finalists:

Best Wearable Pump: Willow

Willow was a game-changer for maintaining my breastfeeding journey!”

It seems that we’re in a wearable pump revolution. These new pumps do exactly what the name implies, they sit in your bra, so you can walk around and pump as you wear them.

In practice, this means that you can pump literally anywhere at any time. Or, as Willow puts it, “Our breast pump lets you build your life around your purpose and your passion, not around your pumping schedule.” And, as an Ovia mom puts it:

“Absolute best investment I have ever made!! Worth the money. I’m able to chase my 2-year-old around and pump for my 6-month old. The pump is absolutely fantastic.”

Willow also has a companion app that automatically tracks your let down and milk output so you never have to guess how your supply is doing.

A current downside of Willow is that you won’t find many insurance plans that’ll cover the cost of one. And these pumps can get pretty expensive.

“Expensive, but way worth it.”

“Wish I could afford it.”

If you want to go with a different on-the-go pump, try out our other finalists:

Best Manual Pump: Haakaa

Super useful. Fits in your bag for any emergency pumping sessions or in case of engorgement. It also works wonders when breastfeeding on one side and using your Haakaa on the other. You can get up to 3oz per session, which helps a lot to build your own milk stash.”

A manual pump isn’t going to replace an electric pump in your mealtime routine. What it will do is help you capture extra milk as you nurse, and provide you relief if you’re on the go and feeling engorged.

For that, you’ll want a manual pump that’s small, easy to use, and provides great suction. That’s why we’re happy to give an Ovia Family Award to Haakaa, one of the highest-rated products in this year’s awards!

“All breastfeeding moms need this. Great way to passively collect milk, which can help you build a freezer stash without pumping.”

“I like the Haakaa a lot. There’s no work or extra time spent pumping. Just place it on the opposite breast your baby’s nursing from and you got an extra feeding.”

How much do moms love the Haakaa? Well, we think this Ovia parent captured it pretty well:

If you’d like to research a manual pump manually, you could learn about our finalists:

Best Nursing Pillow: Boppy

This has probably been my most used baby item so far. Perfect for breastfeeding, which is multiple times a day. It’s easy to travel with (I don’t leave the house without it) and it’s also easy to clean because the cover is removable and you just throw it in the washer.”

If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll be nursing a lot. Holding your baby in place as they nurse can make your arms tired, and keeping proper posture while you do it can wear out your back as well.

That’s what makes a nursing pillow so great! Our winner, Boppy, is the original nursing pillow. It supports your baby as you nurse, giving your arms and back a break while holding them in the proper nursing position.

“I use mine ALL THE TIME! When I don’t have it, I notice more neck and back pain.”

“I always say this was my #1 favorite baby shower gift. Could not go a day without my Boppy.”

And Boppy isn’t just great for nursing! As this Ovia parent points out:

“So amazing because you can use it for all types of things as well as breastfeeding! You can use it for when your little ones want to hold the baby, or family members, you can use it for comfort, or tummy time, it’s an all-round amazing pillow!”

Boppy is incredibly popular, and the most common name brand for breastfeeding pillows. We did have one other finalist, and it’s also really great. For another option, check out our friends at My Brest Friend.
