Building the perfect nursery

Building a “perfect nursery” is all about planning. Figure out your aesthetic, your budget, and the things you can’t live without. Give it some thought, dream big, then get in there with a gameplan. We’ve got some ideas for how you can organize your thoughts.

Is the nursery for you or for baby, your style or theirs?

Some moms want their nursery to be super cute, with tons of fun toys and kid-friendly decorations. Other moms go for a comfortable, modern space that’s in line with the aesthetic of their whole home.

Knowing what the style of the space will be is a big first step towards making a nursery that will work for both you and for baby.

How much space are you working with?

Does baby have their own room or will you be converting a space somewhere else? Knowing just how much floor space you have is very important. It’s easy to get carried away with decorations and not leave enough room for the things your nursery actually needs!

If your space is limited, think about verticality. What can you store up high?

Also, just because you’ve got a whole room available doesn’t mean it needs to be completely devoted to being a nursery. Maybe it would be nice to have a quiet area for you in baby’s room or perhaps you want to leave some space to fill with furniture as baby grows up.

Finding things that fit the space will give the nursery purpose, and you might enjoy the room a lot more than you would by trying to fill it with anything and everything you can get your hands on.

What’s your budget like?

Budgeting isn’t just about money – it’s also about time. Painting and decorating takes a lot of time, and new baby furniture can be very expensive. If you’re lucky enough to have some quality hand-me-downs, maybe start there. What kind of aesthetic can you build from them?

If you’re limited on time, give yourself a break when it comes to big nursery plans. You don’t have to make the cover of Nursery Monthly to have a great space that’s comfortable for cleaning and changing. Set some goals, put a plan in place, and take pride in all the little things you manage to accomplish while you build out your dream nursery.

What’s your changing area?

Technically, you can put baby’s crib anywhere. But the big thing that sets a nursery apart from the rest of your home is a dedicated changing area.

It’s a space that needs to have plenty of room for changing a growing baby and be easy to clean regularly. You’ll want everything you use during a changing within an arm’s reach, so you can keep one hand on baby while the other grabs spare diapers, wipes, powder, and anything else you might need.

When you’re stocking your nursery, don’t forget to pick up some good diapers and a whole bunch of wipes. Huggies® Little Snugglers Diapers and Huggies® Natural Care® Wipes are designed to provide outstanding skin care for your newborn – they’re gentle enough to keep them comfortable, and strong enough to keep them clean.

Because a changing area is so important, you might want to start there and build outward.

Do you love it?

The perfect nursery is the one that works for you, your baby, your space, and your budget. Hopefully spending time with your newborn in your nursery brings you absolute joy. Love the nest you make.
