Gym memberships and fitness classes can be expensive, but your benefits plan can help cover some, or all, of the cost.
Why use a gym?
A gym is a great way to stay motivated and get variety in your workouts. Many people in the habit of working out find the gym to be a way to relax. You can even visit the gym with your partner or a friend for extra motivation. While you can do plenty of effective workouts at home or outside, many people like the variety of machines and equipment that a fully-stocked gym offers.
How is exercise good for pregnancy?
If you’ve maintained an exercise routine before pregnancy, most health care providers agree that you can continue it through your pregnancy as long as you adapt along the way (like less rigorous cardio for your smaller lung capacity with that baby pressing up against your lungs, no more push-ups once your belly is touching the floor and less weight on those squats).
If you haven’t exercised before getting pregnant, now is a great time to start (unless your health care provider advises against it). Benefits of exercise during pregnancy include enhancing cardiovascular health, boosting mood and energy levels, preventing back pain, improving sleep quality, moderating weight gain, increasing muscle strength and preparing for challenges of delivery. Exercise can also help protect you from complications such as gestational diabetes.
How is exercise good for fertility?
Even though it’s unknown whether exercise directly affects fertility, women who are overweight are more likely to develop certain fertility issues, like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Doctors recommend getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily to manage weight and avoid weight gain-related conception issues. Exercise can also boost a male partner’s fertility, another important part of the conception equation.
