Immunizations are shots that help prevent certain illnesses in children. Giving children a few shots can provide long-term protection against serious disease.
Letting your child get these shots on time, every time, is the best way to protect them from getting certain diseases and infections.
What’s covered?
Some covered expenses include charges made by your physician or a facility where these shots are given to your child to prevent infectious diseases. Materials that are used to provide the shots to your child are also covered. These shots must be recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Most immunizations require a second or third dose before children are fully immunized. The schedule for the first doses looks like this:
- Birth: Hepatitis B.
- Two months old: Pertussis, Diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae (Hib), Pneumococcal conjugate, Polio, Rotavirus (RV), Tetanus.
- 12-15 months old: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella.
The bottom line
Immunizations save lives. Because of these shots, diseases like smallpox and polio are less common in the United States. Children get the protection they need and don’t have to suffer from these terrible conditions. If you have questions about immunizations, have a conversation with your child’s pediatrician or other healthcare provider. You don’t have to rely on one source.
