A pregnant African-American woman with her doula or birth support coach. The expectant mother, who had pink hair and is wearing a pink shirt, is sitting outdoors on a patio sofa smiling. The doula, a mixed race woman, is kneeling in front of her, touching her round abdomen. Both women are in their 30s.

What does a doula do?

Every pregnancy is different. So whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fifth, a doula can provide the personalized support you need on your pregnancy journey.

What is a doula?

A doula is trained in providing physical and social support before, during, and after childbirth. They are experts in communicating with your medical team, teaching you relaxation and breathing techniques, and explaining labor and delivery procedures to you. You can rely on a doula to answer all your questions about giving birth and help you create a birth plan. Some doulas even specialize in support for pregnant people at certain stages of their pregnancy experience. Many doulas are available for all stages. These support stages include:

Before childbirth: Providing the pregnant person with education and resources to support
a healthy delivery.
During labor: Caring for and encouraging the pregnant person during labor.
After childbirth: Providing support during the first few weeks after birth, including
breastfeeding assistance, childcare, and other important everyday tasks.

Having a doula makes the load of having a new baby a little lighter. This person is ready to advocate for you and your wellness during this major life event. Adjusting to the changes associated with this becomes less stressful with a doula.
