Breast changes are an expected and normal part of pregnancy. From early in the first trimester, you may notice an increase in size, shape or tenderness. In the second trimester, some people also notice leakage of early breastmilk, called colostrum. Having the right maternity bras can go a long way to helping you feel supported and comfortable.
What is a maternity bra?
Maternity bras are designed to accommodate the changing size of your body and breasts with comfort in mind. Most are made of a softer cotton or bamboo material for breathability, have wider straps, and have multiple closure options on the band to adjust as you grow. Most maternity bras don’t have underwire and are very stretchy to ensure that they don’t put pressure on your growing, sensitive breasts.
If you’re comfortable in your usual bras, especially if you tend to use a bralette or soft style anyway, then new bras might not be necessary. Nursing bras may have similar designs and construction as maternity bras, with additional panels and closure over the nipples for absorbency and easy access for breastfeeding.
Buying maternity bras
Brand-name maternity bras can be pricey, but you’ll find similar styles online or from lower-cost retailers. If you plan to breastfeed, you can also cut costs by skipping straight to nursing bras, which offer the same benefits but with a longer use time. You can also use maternity bras while breastfeeding by adding disposable or reusable nursing pads for leakage. Keep in mind that you only need a few of these bras to start. Many experts suggest buying three. One to wear, one to sit in the laundry, and one to be mid-wash. Hand washing these items also helps them last longer!
Getting the right fit
Most maternity or pregnancy stores have professional bra fitters to help you narrow down your choices. Never walk out of the store without trying on your selections since even the same size in different brands may fit differently. It is very important to choose the best fit not only for your comfort but also to minimize pressure or pinching on your breast tissue and expand on your milk ducts.
A properly fitting maternity bra should easily hold your breasts within the cups and have a comfortably snug band so it doesn’t ride up. Don’t forget that in addition to your breasts growing, and your rib cage may expand, so it helps to look for bras with multiple closure options for growth or are very stretchy.
