Blurred or double vision

Blurred vision is when a person’s eyesight becomes noticeably less sharp. Double vision is when a person sees two images of something where there should only be one.

What causes it?

Vision changes aren’t uncommon during pregnancy. Experts believe that these changes might happen because of fluid retention in pregnancy, as well as rising pregnancy hormones that cause the eye tissue to temporarily soften. However, vision changes may sometimes be associated with more serious conditions like gestational diabetes, pregnancy induced hypertension, or preeclampsia. This is especially the case when the vision changes are accompanied by symptoms like headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, or sudden swelling of the face, arms, or legs.

Tips?

Call your provider if you have vision changes that last longer than two hours, or if you notice physical symptoms like a headache, fever, abdominal pain, vaginal spotting or bleeding, swelling of the hands or face, or painful urination.
